To learn more or inquire, please contact our Birdability Captain, Public Programs Coordinator, Nicole Hertel. Join NH Audubon and Future in Sight for a delightful birding outing at the McLane Center in Concord, NH. This birding adventure will begin indoors at the McLane Center. We will discuss birds, why they are important, and the basics of birding, including birding by ear and how to recognize common calls. We will provide opportunities for tactile exploration of bird features to experience size and textures. As part of our birding introduction, an educator will introduce our resident Barred Owl, who is blind, for an up-close experience to benefit our participants with low vision. We expect both human and animal participants to enjoy this encounter! We will also be utilizing Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Merlin Bird ID phone application to help us ID birds by ear and talk about some other apps that can be helpful when birding by ear. Then we will head out and meander along the All Persons Trail to see what wild birds we can find! Birders of all ages and skill levels are warmly invited. We will cover some essentials, though experienced birders are encouraged to share their own tools, tips, and tricks. Uncover fresh techniques and forge connections with fellow bird lovers! The McLane Center is home to a variety of bird habitats, encompassing forest, grassland, and edge environments. This event is free of charge. We will have some binoculars for folks to borrow but if you have a pair, please feel free to bring them along! Please dress for the weather. We may walk as far as half a mile on mostly flat, crushed stone trails. The nature trail is well-kept, at least sixty inches wide, complete with pull-outs, and is free of steps, ramps, gates, and bollards for easy navigation. Parking is paved, providing accessible and van-accessible spaces, curb cuts, and a pull-off area. Restrooms are accessible, featuring wide doorways. While rest areas are limited, there are some benches along the trail. The path presents a mix of shaded and sunlit sections. There may be some traffic noises from the roads nearby. Regular maintenance, including mowing and pruning, ensures the trail remains free of branches and overgrown vegetation. Birding from a vehicle is not suitable for this outing. Please be advised, dogs are not permitted on this outing, with the exception of service animals. By attending this event, you and anyone you register on behalf of agree to NH Audubon’s Outdoor Education Program Liability Release & Agreement Waiver. Please contact Nicole Hertel with any questions.
