About this event
A 2-Day Workshop!—If you like the idea of using images from magazines and similar publications to create collages that tell a story, then this workshop will provide a wealth of imagery and ideas for executing your own pieces. For many of us, magazine collage was the first form of collage we were exposed to, along with the rich array of possibilities using existing imagery. It also harkens back to the irreverent tradition of the pioneer artist Hannah Hoch, the only female member of the Dada artist movement in post WWI Germany. It’s an opportunity to walk down the path of surrealism, political commentary, or any number of other subjects of your choosing. Level: Beginner – no experience necessary! Registration closes October 31, 2026. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email. Sample image (detail) by Sharon Robinson WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes a $16 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including matboard, additional paints and pigments, stencils, stamps, and access to more collage/magazine materials. Students will need to bring additional supplies of their own, including: 6-8 colors of acrylic paint, including black and white Scissors Xacto knife Glue Stick – we recommend UHU stick, but any will do Small bottle of Liquitex or Golden brand Acrylic Medium, in Gloss or Matte finish (Note: NOT VARNISH) (optional) Assortment magazines or other found papers such as sheet music, book pages, maps, etc. (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) and/or wear clothes that can get a little messy MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Sharon Robinson is a mixed media, collage and assemblage artist residing in the Washington, D.C. area.
