About this event
Wind Orchestra presents: "Movements and Dances" and Concert Band presents: "Voices of Nature" Thursday, Oct. 8 | 7 PM | Florence Kopleff Recital Hall The Georgia State University Wind Orchestra and Concert Band share the stage for an evening of two distinct programs. The Wind Orchestra opens with "Movements and Dances" — a dynamic program spanning a century of wind band writing. The concert features Jonathan Dagenais's high-energy Mouvement Frénétique, Larry Daehn's reflective "With Quiet Courage" (conducted by Jacob Brown) and David Maslanka's luminous "Illumination," conducted by Lawrence Williams. The program culminates in two crowd favorites: Tchaikovsky's thunderous "1812 Overture," arranged by Williams and conducted by Israel LaFleur, and Norman Dello Joio's wit-filled "Satiric Dances," conducted by Julianna Pinero. The Concert Band follows with "Voices of Nature" — a program that flows between serenity and vitality, drawing on the rich imagery of water, landscape and natural wonder. The concert features Shizuka Sato and Naoya Wada's shimmering "The Sounds of Spring" (2013), conducted by Julianna Pinero, Adolphus Hailstork's soulful "New Wade 'n Water" (2002), Steven Bryant's luminous "Bloom" (2004) and Ralph Vaughan Williams' beloved "Sea Songs" (1924). Admission is free and open to the public.
