About this event
Judaism for a Complicated World Dell JCC This series explores how Jewish wisdom can help us navigate the challenges of modern life with greater purpose, connection, openness, and moral courage. Across four sessions, we’ll draw on Jewish texts, traditions, and timeless debates to consider how we care for our inner lives, build meaningful community, engage across differences, and use our voices responsibly. Together, we’ll explore how Judaism can offer both practical guidance and deeper questions for living thoughtfully in an increasingly complicated world. October 8: What is a Soul and How do We Tend to it? What is a soul, and how can tending to it help us navigate an increasingly complicated world? From prayers to Talmud to philosophical debates, Jewish tradition has a lot to say about this elusive concept. We will explore what it means to have both a soul and free will, and how these ideas can guide us through the moral, spiritual, and practical challenges we face. We will also consider what it means to nourish our souls and how Jewish wisdom can help us find clarity, purpose, and resilience amid life’s complexities. October 20: Finding Our Place While our world is more connected than ever, many people feel increasingly alone. Jewish tradition prioritizes community and teaches that human beings are made to be in relationship with one another. It also recognizes the complexities of navigating these relationships and finding belonging. How do we find our place and foster meaningful connections? We will explore what it means to create and sustain community, and how Jewish wisdom can help us navigate loneliness. November 5: The Art of Disagreement Jewish tradition views disagreement as an essential part of the search for truth. But while some disagreements are machloket l’shem shamayim (for the sake of Heaven), others can tear relationships apart. How do we engage with each other respectfully? How do we hold our convictions while remaining open to other perspectives? Through Jewish texts and teachings, we will explore what distinguishes disagreement from conflict and how to make disagreements productive. November 17: Speaking Up and Speaking Carefully In a world shaped by rapid change, information overload, public accountability, and uncertainty, how do we know when to speak up and when to stay silent? How do we differentiate between lashon harah (gossip) and courage? Through classic Jewish texts and contemporary dilemmas, we will explore how to use our speech responsibly in ways that both honor moral courage and maintain each person’s dignity by recognizing them to be b’tzelem Elohim (in the image of God).
