About this event

Bring your family to the Type-In: Typewriting in the Neo-Analog Age at the Noble Maritime Collection where children, six and over, and other people of all ages, have the chance to tryout or return to the clickety-clack of a manual typewriter. Ardito witnessed the excitement and focus of children participating in Type-Ins, including Pretzel Park in Philadelphia in 2016 seen in the accompanying photograph. Pushing the keys down, see them raise up and hearing them strike the paper, the appearance of a letter – maybe ones they are just learning or putting together in words to write sentences – are all the sensory feedback that appeals to kids – and, really, everyone. Add to that a finished product, all from one device, one without a screen. The Noble Maritime Collection, part of Snug Harbor Cultural Center, is family friendly. Explore Oceanus, the current exhibit of sea creature sculptures and photographs, a ship-model gallery and hands-on sea-going instruments. In addition to stimulating the imagination, the museum exhibits can provide subjects to type about in a mini-report or letter to a friend. Have a typewriter stashed in the back of a closet or up in the attic? Or one you are currently using? Bring it along, no matter what shape it is in and learn more about it with experts and enthusiasts on hand. Register online. Schedule of activities: 12:30: Talk by collector Bryan Kravitz, owner of Philly Typewriter, about the history of typewriters and their appeal today. 1:30 – 4:30 Head for the typewriters. Find inspiration and follow prompts in the museum’s galleries, including the images and sea creatures of the Oceanus exhibit, maritime family activities, or the archival objects and photos in the Writing Room. Type out a poem, a letter, or just listen to the clickety-clack on the keys. Also ongoing, “Typewriter Road Show”: Michael Ardito, an expert in typewriter repair will evaluate the condition and provide insight into the history and use of the machines that are brought to the event. The typewriter of artist John Noble will be on display. 2 p.m.: Typewriter poet Marina Gasparyan, will be on hand to compose a poem with you. 3 p.m. Typewriting speed contest The event is organized by Ardito, owner of Hometown Business Machines and writer Kathryn Carse. Type-In: Typewriting in the Neo Analog Age is made possible by a DCLA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
