About this event

THE EMANATION: Gallery for Ghosts A Collaborative Performance and Exhibition by Sean F. Edgecomb, Candice Flewharty, and Jacquelyn Marie Shannon. Gallery 198, Brooklyn, New York, Oct 8-Nov 2, 2026 Opening: Thursday, Oct. 8 6pm Doors 7pm Ritual 8pm Talkback BROOKLYN, NY — The Emanation: Gallery for Ghosts, a multidisciplinary collaboration by curator Sean F. Edgecomb, dancer Jacquelyn Marie Shannon, and painter Candice Flewharty, comes to Gallery 198, bringing together performance, painting, drawing, video, and ritual to explore the ways history might be encountered through the body, the material world, and the possibility of haunting. Originally developed and performed at Gallery for Ghosts, an attic gallery housed within a seventeenth-century house in Norwichtown, Connecticut, The Emanation asks a deceptively simple question: How might we channel ghosts, and what might they teach us? At the center of the project was an improvised, butoh-inspired dance performed by Shannon in Connecticut. Drawing on her scholarly expertise in haunting and the occult, Shannon approached the performance as an embodied encounter with the unseen. As she moved through the historic space, Flewharty created live, gestural drawings in response to the movement, translating the ephemeral performance into marks, gestures, and material traces. These drawings subsequently became the basis for evocative oil paintings. At Gallery 198, The Emanation expands this original site-specific practice into a new exhibition context. The project has increasingly moved beyond Gallery for Ghosts, entering the attics and interiors of other historic houses and establishing an expanding network of physical sites and imagined relationships among the spirits believed to inhabit them. Live video feeds from Gallery for Ghosts are projected into exhibition spaces, creating a virtual channel through which these geographically separated sites might communicate. This exhibition begins with a ritual performed by Shannon on October 8, activating the gallery and inviting audiences into this expanding network of embodied, material, and imagined encounters. The ritual will be followed by a talkback moderated by Dr. Marice Rose, Professor of Art History at Fairfield University. The Emanation ultimately proposes haunting not as the recovery of a fixed past, but as an active process of making contact with what remains. Through movement, gesture, paint, architecture, video, and ritual, the project transforms ephemeral encounters into material traces and asks how we might remember differently when history is understood as something that can still move through us. About the Artists Sean F. Edgecomb, Ph.D., is a curator, scholar, and arts administrator whose work explores performance, history, embodiment, and queer cultural memory. His curatorial practice brings interdisciplinary approaches to historical spaces and material culture. Jacquelyn Marie Shannon is a dancer and scholar whose work engages haunting, the occult, embodiment, and performance. Her butoh-inspired practice explores the body as a site through which histories and unseen presences might be encountered. Candice Flewharty is a painter and visual artist whose practice engages gesture, materiality, memory, and the relationship between the ephemeral and the material. In The Emanation, her live drawings and subsequent paintings transform performance into a visual record that remains open to interpretation and reactivation.
