This event is free to the public — please RSVP. Click here to RSVP. America’s Tapestry In the winter of 1780, General Washington and the Continental Army encamped at the Dey family estate in Passaic County — and it was the women of the household, free and enslaved, who kept the army fed and clothed. Leading the “Ladies of Trenton,” Hester Dey and her daughter-in-law raised more than $15,000 for the cause. Their story is the keystone of America’s Tapestry, a national exhibition commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence through thirteen hand-embroidered panels, one for each of the original colonies. Each panel spotlights a lesser-known event or individual from the founding era. Communally stitched by nearly 2,000 volunteers aged 3 to 968 across thirteen states, the exhibition debuted at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary and was featured on NBC Nightly News.
