Anders Bo Rasmussen: “Celebrating and Complicating the Norwegian Civil War Experience”
Monday, October 12, 2026 · 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM CDT
Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall · New Lenox, IL
About this event
Since J. A. Johnson’s 1869 The Scandinavian Regiment’s History , writers and scholars have celebrated the Norwegian-born “sturdy Vikings” of the Civil War era. While this narrative contains much truth, it leaves important aspects of their experience unexplored. Drawing on Civil War Settlers (CUP, 2022) and subsequent research, this talk examines how questions of class, race, and gender, including draft resistance and ideas of civilizational superiority, are reshaping our understanding of Scandinavian Americans in the Civil War and why these findings continue to matter today.
