About this event

Friends Peace Teams looks forward to sharing practices that people around the world have found essential in working for just, peaceful homes, communities, and societies. This workshop starts with the AVP Basic workshop, so newcomers are welcome. We build on that legacy integrating trauma healing, liberation from oppression, and seeking a consensus of love and conscience, so experienced facilitators may deepen their practice as well. Join us! People curious about or new to Friends Peace Teams, as volunteers or Yearly Meeting Representatives, will find this a great orientation to how we work with one another in community. Support a younger person – teens through adults. Many find this a formative, transformative experience. Consider attending in teams of two or more to better bring the insights, practices, or workshops back to your community. AVP facilitators see a sample agenda on the AVP for Justice and Peace website page: https://friendspeaceteams.org/ avp-justice-peace/ . Each session links to a video playlist demonstrating instructions for each exercise, and we are currently adding written instructions for each exercise as well. The founders of the Alternatives to Violence Project believed that people learned nonviolence best by experiencing it in community. At this workshop, we cook, eat, clean, learn, reflect, work, and play together, practicing the skills we need in a just, peaceful society. For some this is ordinary; for others it is rare or totally new. A recent book, Unforgiving Places, identifies the roots of gun violence deaths in the United States as primarily occurring where people lack methods or examples of how to address and resolve conflict. Nonviolence is a practice. We have great nonviolent tools and skills for resisting and interrupting violence and oppression and creating just, peaceful communities; but we all need to practice!
