Rita Woods | What is True in Fiction?

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM CDT

L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, 400 Eau Claire Street, Eau Claire · Eau Claire, WI

About this event

Registration required on library website. Part of the 2026 Chippewa Valley Book Festival! Every story starts with the seed of an idea and, with any luck, grows into something bigger. But regardless of what kind of fiction you write or read: space opera, medieval quest, dystopian future, romance, dystopian future space romance, one fact remains: there has to be a core truth, at the heart of your story. We will discuss where these story seeds come from and how different (or not) they eventually become from what finally appears on the shelf. We will also explore how much of the writer finds its way onto the page and how writers decide what to keep and what to throw away. Facts vs. Fiction. Truth vs. Truth. Feel free to bring your story seeds to brainstorm. About the Author RITA WOODS writes historical novels, including The Edge of Yesterday, infused with fantasy and magic. Born and raised in Detroit, she is a board certified physician and runs the medical division of a men’s maximum security prison. Twice named one of Chicago’s Top 50 artists of the year, she lives outside of Chicago with her family and a cast of cats, and serves as a Trustee on her local Library Board. Rita is a history nerd and a caffeine addict. She loves to travel and never misses the opportunity to visit a cemetery. Learn more about Rita Woods at ritawoodswrites.com.
